"He looks mad as heck, handing out just deserts as if they were being
plucked off a restaurant cart."
[EW, current issue]

I'm having a language issue problem.

There's an advertisement in the subways that I keep seeing, for a program on the Spanish-language channel -- not sure if it's Telenovela or not -- and it just freaks me out every time I see it. Wish I could find a picture of the ad. It's a shot of this rather long-faced, long-haired, macho looking Hispanic guy in an extremely tight yellow shirt and even tighter plaid pants (I'm working from memory), in several different mincing poses, as if he's the biggest fruit on earth. He's waving his butt at the camera, he's all but doing a ballet twirl. I'm not so much freaked out by the queer angle, that'd be fine, but mixing the macho with the Spanish culture and this odd homosexual twist (at least, that's what it seems like) is just an odd conjunction of images. The title also leaves me in the dark: Pedro, el escamoso. So I've scribbled down the word "el escamoso" twice and finally looked it up at OneLook and came up with nada. Altavista's babelfish told me the translation for "el escamoso" was "el escamoso." Genius.

pedro, in non-mincing mode
So I searched the Internet and found the show listing. After translating the page, I'm still just as in the dark. Here's what the translation says (and it just proves that there's a long distance between translation and meaning, but even still....)

It is the history of Pedro Coral , a escamoso, alive man and enamoradizo, who forced to flee from his town by a problem of skirts, gets at the city to try to fight by a future that every time appears more uncertain.

The luck accompanies it and enters to work like driver in a company, without suspecting that there it will know the woman of his life: Paula Dávila , an impossible love by the simple fact that it crazy is enamored with her head, Caesar Luis Freydell , owner and gentleman of the company where Pedro also works.

Pedro becomes the informer of Paula but its heart betrays it and it still falls in love, knowing that she is given to her relation with Caesar Luis. Nevertheless, despecho changes the destiny of Paula , who in one night of desperation and thanks to the abandonment in which she left its fiancee it, finishes in the arms of Pedro, its driver, who without thinking twice, moved by its love, takes advantage of the situation.....

What has happened and what will happen in... Pedro the escamoso?

Pedro returned to the city and when she saw Paula she could not disguise the love that still feels by her. Caesar Luis dedicated itself to give jealousy him to Pedro, who did not find like behaving in front of his fianc2ee. And Mayerli could not either disguise the jealousy when seeing Pedro with fiancee and still enamored with Paula.

Heh. A problem of skirts. I still have no idea what the connection between this storyline is and that very strange ad. Damn. Wish I had a digital camera.

Baby news!

Meet Nathaniel (Nate) Haller Buckley, born February 1, 2:17 am, 7 lbs 6 1/2 ounces, 21 inches long. He's the son of my good buddies (courtesy of The Ivy Vine list) and their first. Have you ever seen a baby seem so present, so early? This is one intense kid. I think he will have a very interesting time of it.

The behemoth (my new word for The Book Which Has Occupied Much of My Life) is finally ready to be shipped to readers. Crossing fingers; this is the easy part. If they say it sucks, it sucks and I can save myself a lot of time sending it to publishers. If there's any hope to be salvaged, here it can be done. I feel like I'm sending my kid to college.

There may be other book news soon, but I'll have to do more research before wanting to report on that. It's one of these situations where I'm terrified to do it myself but will kill myself if someone else does it. Ever have those moments?
