So, once you get out of the initial coastal towns, the walk turns abruptly rural. It's not nearly as clear or well-marked with acorn signs as the Hadrian's Wall walk I took in 2004. That picture on the left is a good one; later on the paths would get positively claustrophobic. But more on that down the road. So to speak. I made a wrong turn at one point, when the path turned onto a tarmac road. The guidebook I have, called "South West Coast Path - Minehead to South Haven Point" is by Paddy Dillon, and compared to the anal Trek-Inn directions I had for Hadrian's, it just can't compare. It'll say something like "Climb gradually up a slope, passing from Lescleave Cliff to Rinsey Head. Follow the path as marked, well back from the headland, then go through a car park and pass a National Trust sign for Rinsey Cliff." One might say that on a 13 mile trip that "follow the path as marked" on a path that's pretty crappily marked, is somewhat ... oh, general. Like, how far do you follow the f-ing path? |
